Portraits
It was hard finding Alexei Udall in a situation at ease, so displayed him as more closed off and far more guarded then the others. however i realised this was very charismatic and truer to him than if i had tried to have him pose. Again the colour was important, the soft blue lending to the impression of his calm despite having his guard up. I also enjoyed working round his highly reflective sunglasses, having him wearing a object that often hides and conceals, yet still showing clearly who it was intended as was a fun challenge.
With the portrait of Dominic Laws the image was not taken intentionally but worked well at showing him at ease and comfortable, his pose displaying a lot of expression. Its this that I worked to improve, so that it would show to him my impression of his character, whilst saying true to what the original picture displayed.
Jaspreet Sambi's portrait was the most removed form its, original setting as with this picture I strove to give my impression of her, and focus on her individuality, this was helped with my selection of colour and bolder use of outlines and shading. I feel its a testament to her lovely attitude in life that the picture worked out so well.
The picture of Hazel Frances, is based on a photo that for practicality showed a close up of her face and features, this was traced, then under layered with thick simple blocks of colour and lastly given shadows. The whole process leaves the subject simplified, yet highlighted and charismatic. With Hazel the background was requested, purple her favourite colour.
The portraits were a response by me to include my friends and show them exactly what I have been up to for a year, originally partly conceived as replacements to Christmas cards they unfortunately arrived too late, The portraits where also considered to stand as a stills for a possible animation, the method i use to work on these pictures has stemmed form study and practice that was for a moving animated image, closer to my practice.
