Mannequins are Models
Are Mannequins
By Kaisa Leinonen
My second love, window display took me to Harvey Nichols in London only to find myself looking at something so familiar, my first love, fashion photography. My favourite fashion photographer Tim Walker creates magical worlds with models as fairies, and often posed like beautiful sculptures. In the Harvey Nichols’ romantic spring windows mannequins are literally flouting in clouds, in a dream world of horses, sailing, gardens and doves. Mannequins are posed in action, riding a horse, hugging each other, sitting on a swing, kneeling on the floor, and holding on to a rope, as if purposely designed just for this window. Each window acts a part in the fashion story, just like every spread in Tim Walkers photographic stories.
Mannequins live in an imaginary world consisting of props and products. In a same way fashion images are often shot in a studio or on sets, with products and other elements carefully placed. Models are even more so placed and posed awkwardly in the photos staring into space with dead eyes and no smiles. There are great similarities between the two and it seems that mannequins are becoming like models in fashion pages, and models are being posed like stiff mannequins.
