The Perfect Photo Shoot
By Rebecca Parkes
So you want to be a successful photographer? Its important that from the outset you understand that the most important thing when doing a photo shoot is the planning. Roughly 80% of the process is planning and preparing and only 20% the actual shoot.
In this series I am going to use a fashion shoot as an example, but the same rules apply for all kinds
of photography, be it product, landscape, wedding, portrait photography etc.
The planning is crucial to getting great shots. The most important things to consider in a fashon shoot are theme, what models to use, clothing, location, accessories and props.
A fashion shoot is a highly organised event with lots of people working together to get the right image. You will have a photographer, model, make up artist and a stylist. Contact between them all is essential for everything to work. Many months of planning may go into a couple of shots.
The team will get together to discuss ideas, colours and themes. It’s a good idea to begin by thinking of themes and ideas by doing a brainstorm. Then the shoot is broken down and different people will be in charge of different parts. Storyboards will be drawn and all elements researched and well thought out.
It is important to
plan everything or the shoot will not run smoothly at all. For example imagine turning up to your special waterside location only to find the local football team are having a match there. When you want a photo to be perfect you must perfectly plan every aspect of it.
