Woolly Winterland
By Hannah Shakir

Out of all the trends that have arisen this season, from forties glamour to leather’s new guise, they’ve all been fairly unsuccessful and horribly “festive” looking. The only wearable trends, in my opinion, have been the primary school look and loose knits, which have taken to the general public like a duck to water.

The primary school look, adopting the abundant use of coloured and woollen tights, skirts, dresses, plimsolls and Mary Jane’s is extremely wearable yet still sophisticated. Designer’s such as Paul Smith, Sonia Rykiel, Luella and Pucci all adopted this look for Autumn/Winter 07 and each put their own individual takes on the style. This trend is much more exciting than the usual shiny, embellished party frocks that get churned out for this season, as seen in the collections of Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli and Christopher Kane; resulting in the models looking much like a bunch of Christmas baubles that have rolled off the tree and onto a catwalk.

However the more practical and traditional loose knit trend is an absolute hit for this season, being that it’s functional and is the epitome of winter wear. Being popularised by the likes of Betty Jackson, Giles and Stella McCartney this trend is brilliant for covering up the Christmas paunch that one may have gained.

Upon reflection this hasn’t been the most inspiring or ground breaking season for fashion, so it only seems fair to appreciate the plus points of woolly tights and big jumpers to shield us from the elements.
